Hung At The Gallows

I've been writing about and photographing information boards at various locations in the town this week and there's another hung on the side wall of the Gallows Inn on Nottingham Road. This one though is more about the Erewash Canal than the town itself but is very informative under five headings which are General, Natural History, Local Heritage, Gallows Inn and Leisure and Recreation.
 

Sandwiched

There's another of those information boards sandwiched between an old style telephone kiosk (much nicer than the new sort don't you think?) and a pub sign in front of the Poplar Inn on Lower Bath Street.

Don't take any notice though of the Live Music, Traditional Ales or Hot and Cold Food - the Poplar has closed and the pub is boarded up so if you want any food it will have to be from a nearby chip shop although the one directly opposite is also closed or like the information board - a sandwich!

Spanish Gold

No "gold" picture today although as Spain won the 18 carat gold trophy that is the World Cup last night, I'm sure there were plenty of celebrations by the patrons of the Spanish Bar.

Today's picture though is more about the weather than the World Cup as these two girls were both sporting umbrellas as opposed to sun shades today. We seem to have gone from July to November in one day with a significant drop in the temperature and the hot sunny days of recent weeks being replaced by a cold and wet one. The gardens will be grateful for it but it came as a shock to the system. Mind you the weather is more in keeping with the football season!

Alive and Well

Elvis is alive and well and will be appearing at the Larklands Hotel in Ilkeston on Saturday.

Don't know how many will be there to witness the event though as all football fans will surely be at home watching England play the USA. Anyway there's a rumour going round that it's an imposter but there is a prize for the best dressed Teddy Boy that turns up. Now I wonder if I can still get into those drainpipe trousers ....

St George's Day

Not so very long ago Ilkeston was at the forefront in the country of celebrations for St George's Day with parades and fun events that attracted visitors from all corners of the country. Then rules, regulations, restrictions and prohibitive costs all conspired to put a damper on things so today the celebrations have been somewhat muted in the town although they do seem to be picking up elsewhere.

For the most part Ilkeston's nod to the Patron Saint has been restricted to a few flags flying from public buildings and some decorated shop windows apart from the pubs that have turned the day into an excuse for a beer festival. Even those people that did take the trouble to dress for the occasion congregated at The Borough where St George left his trusty steed outside whilst quenching his thirst.

Cold Beer

There's a sign outside The Observatory on the Lower Market Place proclaiming that the Beer Garden is open but only the hardy (or should that be foolhardy) would be taking advantage of the outdoor facility. After a lovely weekend where people were walking around town soaking up the sun, it was a temporary return to winter clothes and gloves today as they dodged the showers but could do little to avoid the cold wind.

If anyone did take the opportunity to sit outside, one thing they could be sure of would be a cold beer!
