Farewell Old Friend

I don't read as many books now as I used to but over the years I've always enjoyed a Dick Francis novel. I think I've read them all except his most recent publication but they are generally good yarns even if you aren't a horse racing fan and are a good form of relaxation. It was with some sadness therefore when I heard of his death yesterday.

I was also saddened to see the demise of another old friend today as a tree in St Mary's churchyard was felled. To a layman's eye it looked perfectly healthy if a tad crooked but a closer view at the logs on the ground showed a blackened centre and it must have been a possible safety hazard. It was still sad to see it go. My thoughts went back to the Annual Charter Fair many years ago when the Rockets spun round and round here clipping the autumn leaves as they went and to a later fair when some branches were removed to allow the passage of another fairground ride. That won't be a problem this coming October.
